CHILDREN’S centres in Portsmouth will be taking part in a ‘payment by results’ pilot scheme.

Portsmouth is one of 18 authorities selected for the trial until March 2013 which will reward centres according to the success of services they provide for children under five and parents.

The findings will be used to develop a set of measures of success so that ‘payment by results’ – the amount given to centres by government depending on their results – can be brought in nationally from 2013-14.

They will be assessed on their performance in reaching the most vulnerable families, improving family health and wellbeing and raising the attainment of children at age five.

Cllr Rob Wood, cabinet member for children’s services, said: ‘Being chosen for the trial means that we will be able to demonstrate that our children’s centres really do make a difference to families locally.’
