PRIMARY schoolchildren rounded off their book week with a ‘Dahl-icious’ tribute to the great children’s author.

More than 300 youngsters at Milton Park Primary in Portsmouth came as their favourite Roald Dahl character for the day.

The occasion was not only a celebration of the youngsters’ love of reading but also a fundraiser for the writer’s Marvellous Children’s Charity which supports seriously-ill and disabled children.

The children, who raised £183 for charity, had spent the week reading his works which they used as inspiration for their own short stories and poems.

Deputy head Vanessa Dowse said: ‘It was an extremely successful day and the children were really fired up and enthusiastic. They really wowed us with their knowledge of Roald Dahl books and their outfits were fantastic. The man understood children and the way they thought which is why so many children love what he writes. Exploring Roald Dahl’s books has made our children aware they can not only be readers but also authors themselves.’
