A WEATHERMAN for the BBC returned to his old school in Southsea.

St John’s College welcomed Tomasz Schafernaker back for their annual speech night and prize-giving evening.

He awarded more than 60 students with prizes for achievement, and afterwards spoke of his time as a day and boarding student between 1995 and 1997.

Tomasz proved his determination by becoming, at 22, the youngest person to present the weather on the BBC, and now works for the Met Office and BBC Weather Centre as a TV and radio weatherman.

Head girl Leia Bateman, 17, presented Tomasz with a framed artwork of weather scenes on Southsea seafront.

She said: ‘Tomasz demonstrated the potential that St John’s students possess and is a prime example of how you can achieve success, even if you go against the odds.’

Headteacher Graham Best said: ‘Tomasz clearly had an enjoyable evening.

‘He loved visiting his old school and had many happy memories.’
