A FORMER civil servant from Hong Kong has visited a Portsmouth school.

Rachel Cartland visited Portsmouth High School to give the girls an insight into her life as one of two female civil servants in the Hong Kong Government in the 1970s.

Rachel grew up in North End and went to Portsmouth High School before studying at Oxford. After graduating, she joined the Hong Kong government and went on to serve in a variety of senior posts. She retired in 2006.

She said: ‘It’s great being back but everything is different.

‘I would not have found my way around without a guide.

‘But it has the same spirit as always.

‘With top class education for the girls that has been evolved and enriched to meet the needs of the 21st century.’

Since retiring from the government, she and her husband have remained in Hong Kong and she has recently written her autobiography Paper Tigress.

It will be published in the summer.
