PUPILS and staff have celebrated the opening of the first free school in West Sussex.

Chichester Free School opened to 210 pupils yesterday following three years of lobbying, planning, canvassing local opinion and recruiting staff and students.

The school, which is government-funded but out of local authority control, is open to students from reception to sixth form ages and is based at a temporary site in Vinnetrow Road.

Principal Guy Martyn said: ‘This is the start of an extraordinary new era for education in the Chichester area.’
