DELIGHTED students picked up top GCSE grades at Fareham Academy this morning.

There were tears and plenty of shocked faces as pupils opened their results and discovered they had achieved much better than expected.

Sophie Sillence, 16, of Fareham, (pictured) said she was predicted mostly Es, but ended up bagging two As, two Bs and five Cs.

A jubilant Sophie said: ‘When I started this school, I was predicted mainly Es and Ds. I found reading and English really hard. But I wanted to be an engineer and I knew to do the apprenticeship I needed to get 5 A*s to C. I just worked really hard, it feels really good.’

The school has not yet revealed how many of its students achieved A* to C.

Headteacher Nadine Powrie said: ‘I am very proud of the students, my staff, my governors and the parents because we have all worked together. I think there is a lot of happiness today, you can see it on people’s faces.’
