THERE was shouting for joy, many smiles and a few happy tears as students at Springfield School in Drayton opened their GCSE results.

They achieved 62 per cent (provisional) at the Gold Standard, which is A* to C results including English and maths. This was down from 68 per cent last year.

The school’s A* - C result was 74 per cent.

Head teacher Sara Spivey said the students had performed admirably.

She said: ‘There were some really nice success stories of students who have doe really well and exceeded expectations.

‘We’re really pleased with the maths results, it’s been one of our strongest departments.’

One of the students, Rachel Bishop, 16, from Cosham, said she was thrilled with her one A*, six As and two Bs.

She said: ‘I’m really happy, and really proud of my maths result.

‘I’ve been trying to get an A* for ages and now I’ve finally got one.’

Rachel plans to go onto Portsmouth College.
