A GIRL band are counting down the days to a major singing competition with the prize of a recording contract.

Molly Scott, Emily Stewart, Olivia Tambini and Kelly Childs, known as MELO, have beaten thousands of entries to win a place at the Open Mic UK National Grand Final in London’s O2 on January 21.

The 17-year-old singers, from Park Gate, near Fareham, formed four years ago when they were students at Brookfield Community School in Sarisbury Green, and hope to impress audiences on the night.

And their chances are looking good as an online recording has already attracted more than 17,000 hits.

Molly, who is now at South Downs College, said: ‘Getting to the finals was such a fantastic experience, it still hasn’t sunk in.’

The group’s coach Kim Seagrove, from Hampshire Music Service, said: ‘I’m excited for the girls. This is an amazing opportunity for them. I know how brilliant they are and I want other people to see that for themselves.’
