THE mayor of Gosport is preparing to invite a group of youngsters to the town as part of a project raising awareness about the marine environment.

Councillor Richard Dickson will meet 25 children from schools in Poland, France and Spain. The children will work with pupils from Alverstoke Junior School.

The project, called Aware – ‘Around the World – A Race for the Environment’ sees each school working on one aspect of the marine environment near them.

The school has been working with record-breaking round the world sailor Dee Caffari.

John Bailey, headteacher at Alverstoke Junior School, said: ‘This is proving to be a fantastic project with pupils and staff developing an understanding of their role as European citizens while working collaboratively on the shared theme of sustainable development.’

In November, the school will take 30 children to Les Sables d’Olonne in November to meet the partner schools again and to see the start of the Vendee Globe Yacht Race.
