SIXTH form and further education colleges across the News region will remain open on Thursday when teachers and lecturers strike over changes to their pensions.

Havant, Portsmouth, Fareham, South Downs, St Vincent and Highbury colleges all say their doors will be open to students.

John McDougall, head of Havant College where 85 per cent of teaching staff are members of the three unions NUT, ATL and UCU who voted in favour of strike action, said students with absent teachers would be able to use libraries for private study.

He added: ‘I’m sympathetic to the cause but as a professional I don’t think it’s right to take action.

‘We need to continue to lobby MPs and to make representations to keep up the pressure. I don’t think we will get a lot of support from the public by taking that action that affects parents of children.’
