DOZENS of primary schools across Havant, Gosport and Portsmouth are gearing up for a solar challenge to build a model powered by the sun.

The annual competition – entered this year by five local authorities in Hampshire – aims to raise awareness of renewable energy and environmental concerns.

Model kits are provided free of charge to each team and additional recycled materials are collected by the students to be used in the model.

Teams will initially go against their local schools, before competing in the county finals on July 6 at Intech in Winchester.

Pennie Brown, Havant Borough Council’s climate change and sustainability adviser, said: ‘It’s a great way for children to learn about sustainable forms of energy and the ways in which they can be harnessed while developing team-working skills.’
