SCHOOLGIRL Jessica Thew is taking her first steps in the world of politics by being elected a ‘Member of Parliament’.

Jessica, the 15-year-old head girl of Warblington School, in Havant, has been elected the Member of Youth Parliament for Fareham and Gosport and Havant.

The star student was one of dozens of candidates, aged 11 to 18, who stood in elections across Hampshire schools last month.

She will take up a two-year term of office and work on campaigns locally and nationally, meeting with councillors and MPs and even taking part in a debate in the House of Commons.

Jessica, from Emsworth, said: ‘It’s great to know that lots of people supported my policies. I would like to see a student discount card for pupils aged from 11, not 16.

‘And I would like a youth centre because I don’t think there is enough things for young people to do.’

Jessica’s political hero is US President Barack Obama, who she finds ‘inspirational.’
