NOT many people would believe they could be a maths teacher after leaving school with seven GCSEs and a baby soon in tow.

But for Jenny Phillips, an ambition has been fulfilled this week after completing a mathematics PGCE teaching course at the University of Portsmouth.

From September, the 34-year-old will be a maths teacher at Bourne Community College and will work towards a masters degree. Her ride to the top hasn’t been an easy one. The Bognor Regis resident left school with seven GCSEs at grade C, before tying the knot and giving birth to her son at 19.

She then worked at a chicken factory, supermarkets, and restaurants.

The mum-of-one said: ‘My advice to anyone starting out is never give up, share your troubles and successes as the reward at the end is fantastic.’
