SAILORS are set to teach young pupils to read and write.

Men and women from HMS Collingwood in Fareham are visiting Rowner Infant School, in Gosport on Thursday.

Seven sailors from the Above Water Tactical Training Element at the base will lead workshops with the pupils.

Petty Officer Chris Potter will run them.

He said: ‘The reason that I arranged the visit is that I am on the board of governors of the school.

‘They wanted people to provide role models to the children so that they get to see adults reading and writing other than their own parents, so I volunteered the services of the instructors here at HMS Collingwood.’
