VOLUNTEERS have been thanked for helping school children with their reading.

Read for Life CIC is a not-for-profit social enterprise that trains and supports volunteers in local primary schools in Portsmouth, Gosport and Havant.

Each volunteer works on a one-to-one basis with three children to help them improve and enjoy reading as well as develop self confidence.

Read for Life was established in 2008 by Mary Davis and Sukhi Hazra when the Hampshire branch of a national charity providing this service withdrew from the area.

Read for Life has helped more than 500 children with their reading.

Mary Davis, joint volunteer co-ordinator, said: ‘We want to thank all our volunteers, both past and present, for doing such a fantastic job inspiring children to read and enjoy books.’

Read for Life celebrated the end of its fifth academic year with a birthday party for its 35 volunteers.
