There were tears of joy and friends hugged each other as they opened their results envelope.

Ashley Pare, 18, was the highest achieving student with A*s in Physics, Maths and Computing and an A in Further Maths.

He said: ‘I didn’t expect them to be that high. I have spent so many hours revising. I must have done at least 100.’

Charlotte Payne, 18, of Drayton, is off to Chichester University to do a degree in events management after she got a B in Applied Science and a D in Biology.

‘I got what I was expected to get,’ she said.

‘I am really happy. Biology was a struggle but I’ve managed to do it.’
