A SCHOOL in Copnor has reassured parents the field is safe for its students.

Mayfield School, on Mayfield Road, closed its field earlier this year after metals and asbestos were found in the soil following work to extend the school.

Test results by Portsmouth City Council show there is low risk to the students.

Julien Kramer, interim head of education at the council, said: ‘Our investigations show that the low levels of contaminants found in the soil present no unacceptable risk to health.

‘The level of risk presented in using the playing fields is low.

‘However in order to mitigate any potential future risk, the council is assessing the options for remedial work and has commissioned a management report and will shortly recommend a course of action for works to be undertaken.’
