HOT topics including democracy, safety on Portsmouth’s streets and international human rights campaigns were debated passionately by dozens of students at a Question Time-style debate.

About 100 boys and girls from Mayfield, Admiral Lord Nelson and St Edmund’s Catholic schools were involved in the Question Me UK event at Action Stations, in the Historic Dockyard.

After spending the afternoon exploring the issues in workshops, they took their seats in front of a panel made up of student, university and political representatives.

Hayden Taylor, 15, founder of Question Me UK, which aims to get young people involved in front-line issues, said: ‘It was amazing to see so many young people involved and engaged with the issues that matter to them.

‘The event was a huge success and with feedback we have had, the pupils learnt a lot too. I hope we run many more events in Portsmouth for young people to ensure the people of this city have the chance to speak out about their beliefs.’
