AN ENGLISH literature lecturer has been voted the most inspirational and outstanding teacher at the University of Portsmouth by members of the student union.

Dr Ben Dew was given the honour at the union’s first ever teaching awards for his ‘energy and enthusiasm’ as well as being someone who is ‘exciting, bookworm-ish, deeply analytical and who lectures properly’.

More than 1,000 students also voted for staff and departments, including forensic psychology expert Dr Clare Wilson for most inspiring teacher, memory expert Dr James Ost for best personal tutor, English literature specialist Dr Rosie Paice for best feedback, counsellor Carol Jones for outstanding learner support and Psychology for outstanding department.

Dr Dew said: ‘It’s incredibly flattering and it’s a really good scheme the union has invented to help build better relationships between staff and students. It was a surprise to win and I was delighted.’
