A SCHOOLGIRL is punching above her weight – after winning two Portsmouth City Council bursaries for her outstanding performances in boxing and kick-boxing.

Ebonie Jones, 13, who is ranked first nationally for her age and weight in both sports, has been awarded two junior sports bursaries.

The Springfield student, who trains at the Heart of Portsmouth gym, will now be able to put the £220 towards training and other sports-related costs.

Di Mitchell, the council’s head of education, said: ‘We are thrilled to be able to award Ebonie with these bursaries as she’s clearly worked so hard for them.

‘The award scheme is a fantastic way for the council to help promising young athletes from across the city.

‘Portsmouth has already produced some great young athletes, some of whom are even competing in the London 2012 Olympics.’

The scheme is open to 11 to 19-year-olds in the top 20 nationally for their sport.
