FREE school meals will be ready by September, councils have promised.

Infant children in state-funded schools will be entitled to free school meals from September.

Both Hampshire County Council and Portsmouth City Council remain confident that everything will be ready in time.

Councillor Peter Edgar, executive member for education at Hampshire County Council, said: ‘There will be challenges for the schools but we will help them overcome that. In principle, the idea is the right thing to do.’

Councillor Rob Wood, cabinet member for education at Portsmouth City Council, added: ‘I’m confident we will be ready to go. There have been a few issues. It’s more to do with how many sittings they can do in one go.’
