A PRIVATE school in Portsmouth will be able to offer two annual scholarships to state schoolchildren worth more than £20,000 each from this September thanks to a bank scheme.

Portsmouth High School is celebrating a major boost to its sixth form scholarship programme that will fund two students each year for the next five years throughout their A-levels.

The announcement comes after months of discussion between the school and HSBC, which has offered to pay half of the £10,401 annual tuition fees for two youngsters across the region.

Headmistress Jane Prescott said: ‘We are very much looking forward to being able to offer bursaries to girls in Hampshire, West Sussex and the Isle of Wight and allowing them to benefit from the academic teaching and whole range of leadership opportunities and extra-curricular activities that are available.’

HSBC scholarship places will be awarded on academic merit and are also means-tested.

Portsmouth High School’s parent organisation, the Girls’ Day School Trust, will pay the remaining 50 per cent of the school fees.
