PROSPECTIVE tourist guides for Portsmouth are being invited to an open day for a new course.

Highbury College is working with Portsmouth City Council’s visitor information service to offer the chance to train as a tour guide, with participants studying the city’s rich history and present-day characteristics.

Applicants do not need any qualifications other than a real enthusiasm for Portsmouth and an interest in the arts, history and other related subjects.

Course fees are £265 per person and the commitment is one evening a week for 15 weeks, with at least two practice walks lasting three hours.

The open day, which starts at 1pm, takes place at Highbury College on April 28.

Jane Singh, visitor information services manager, said: ‘This is an exciting opportunity to learn more about Portsmouth’s rich history and apply to join our team of tourist guides.’
