THE shoreline of Langstone Harbour has been cleared of most of the sewage that spilled out of a water pumping station.

Louise MacCallum, the environment officer for the harbour, said Southern Water had got its act together on the clean-up operation following a story in The News last month that highlighted the large amount of unscreened waste that had spewed from Fort Cumberland at Eastney.

A report due to go before the Langstone Harbour Board on February 14 states that areas such as the Hayling oysterbeds are ‘grossly polluted’.

The report was written on January 16.

But Mrs MacCallum said yesterday: ‘Following the story, they did make a massive effort and did clean everything up. Hopefully they are going to continue to keep their act clean.’

The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust is gathering environmental evidence relating to the recent storms and planning a report highlighting the ecological impacts of extreme weather in the region.
