A popular befriending group for older people with disabilities benefited from a team of volunteers from local company, Pfizer, paying them a visit.
Emsworth Day Out Scheme is a befriending club for older people with disabilities in the Havant and Emsworth area.
They meet every Wednesday at Hewitts @ Emsworth between 10.30am and 2.30pm for activities, lunch and a day out every other month.
Pfizer are undertaking a varied programme of volunteering throughout the year.
Ian Morris, Supply Chain Planning Manager at Pfizer, said: ‘It was lovely to come and meet such a warm and friendly group. Pfizer has been running a worldwide ‘getting old’ campaign exploring what it means to get older in the 21st century.
‘For our team it was great to share and hear such a wide range of life experiences from the members attending the group.
‘It was nice that we could come as a ‘one off’ and would encourage anyone with a couple of hours’ free time to volunteer and support Irene with the running of the club.’
Group coordinator Irene Wood said: ‘We would welcome any new members to the group. We provide accessible transport door to door.
‘Our service provides an opportunity for the members’ carers to enjoy a regular day each week free from caring responsibilities.’
The group has been running since 1979 and currently has a couple of members who have been attending every week for over 20 years.
Anne Lucie, a member of the group, said: ‘Coming to the group every Wednesday is very important to me as it gets me out of the house, I’ve made new friends and I get to eat a lovely lunch cooked at Hewitts.
‘I would recommend anyone wanting company to come along.’
