So it’s little wonder that a photography competition to produce a calendar of some of the best shots of Emsworth has gone down a storm.

Dozens of amateur photographers have been out clicking their cameras to find images that represent the town’s beauty and the character of its people.

The initiative is called Emsworth Life – One Day and involves people submitting photographs throughout the year in a bid to have them chosen for a calendar.

The project is being run by Emsworth Business Association with support from The News and our sister paper, the Chichester Observer.

Every month the judging panel choose a winner.

For January the winner was Sandra Sniezek with her stunning snap of the harbour on a sunny winter’s morning.

The 41-year-old teacher is originally from Poland and moved to Emsworth 18 months ago, instantly falling in love with the place.

She said she had been taking pictures for as long as she can remember and this was the first time her snaps had ever been made public.

‘It’s the first competition I have entered and I won it,’ said Sandra. ‘How lucky is that?!

‘I still can’t believe it. It’s only a small competition but for me it’s a big success.’

December’s winner was Vince Lavender, who produced a charming picture of a close-up of the Lobster Pot tree, which graced the quay in the run-up to Christmas.

Vince, a 61-year-old semi-retired IT project manager, of Southleigh Road, Emsworth, said: ‘I was really pleased with the picture.

‘I actually made a Christmas card out of it and sent it to my friends, which was an added bonus.’

John Tweddell, a photographer for 50 years, sits on the judging panel with Sarah Standing, images editor at The News, along with artist Carol Price and web expert Sahir Kara.

John said: ‘It’s becoming more and more difficult for us to decide which is the best.’

The calendar will go on sale in November this year.
