Environmental issues to be debated by students in competition

GOSPORT and Fareham Friends of the Earth is due to hold the Wendy Burkett memorial debating competition for the fifth year running on Thursday next week.

The purpose of the event, which will be held at Cemast at Daedalus, is to encourage students to think of complex environmental issues, as well as gaining debating skills.

Three colleges will be competing for the winning title, with last year’s winner Fareham College up against St Vincent College and Havant College.

Judges include Fareham MP Suella Fernandes, Fareham East councillor Katrina Trott and Friends of the Earth campaigner, Rachel Kennerley.

There will be three topics involved in the debate: the production of food and too much waste; whether the UK’s demand for energy can only be met by rapid development of shale gas extraction; and finally, whether air pollution can be tackled by public transport.
