TWO families had to be evacuated by firefighters tackling a burning sofa in the hallway of a block of flats in Havant this morning.

Fire engines from Havant and Emsworth were called to the blaze in South Street just before 5am today.

The road was closed until 6.30am while the discarded sofa was extinguished.

Havant crew manager Dusty Miller said: ‘We were called out at 4.55am to a fire in South Street, Havant. There was a block of flats with a sofa in the hallway which was on fire. We had two families which we led to safety and a fire investigation officer has been called as the fire is cause doubtful.’
