Family calls for Pompey tribute to Gosport man killed in collision

THE family of a man killed in a moped accident have called for Pompey fans to hold a minute's applause at tomorrow's game at Cambridge United in his memory.

Police today named Gary Martin, 52, as the man who was killed on Portsmouth’s Eastern Road on Wednesday.

The lifelong Pompey supporter, who would have turned 53 tomorrow, died as a result of his injuries in 
hospital colliding with a Mitsubishi pick-up truck at 6.28am.

Gary’s family made the call to Pompey supporters in a Facebook post on The News’ page today calling for the tribute.

His niece Michelle Ralph posted: ‘To the Pompey fans travelling to Cambridge for the away match tomorrow.

‘My uncle, Gary Martin, tragically passed away on Wednesday in an accident in Eastern Road.

‘He would have turned 53 on Saturday and had tickets for the away game.

‘It would be a fitting tribute for a lifelong Pompey supporter and a season ticket holder for more than 30 years, if the fans could do a minute’s applause in memory of an amazing man.’

She asked if the tribute would take place during the game’s 53rd minute.

Other tributes poured in for Gary on Facebook,

Mick Hines posted: ‘Would have been his birthday tomorrow.

‘Lovely man and a great Pompey supporter.

‘He will be greatly missed by his family, and many friends.

‘RIP Gary. It was a pleasure to have known you.’

Allison Taw said: ‘Condolences to Gary’s family and friends. RIP tragic x.’

The truck driver was not injured in the collision which happened at the junction of Kirpal Road.

Kerry Crockford, 45, of East Shore Way, previously told The News: ‘It is diabolical to try and get out of East Shore Way and Kirpal Road.

‘They should never have got rid of the lights at the junction.

‘You have to wait for a pedestrian to use the traffic lights or you have to take your life in your own hands.’
