Fareham kids deliver nearly 60,000 punches in challenge for Children in Need

Fareham Shopping Centre was filled with shouts and thuds as the youngsters from Okinawan Karate and Kobudo Association in Fareham managed to complete the challenge in the space of two hours.

The martial arts apprentices were from the club’s junior team, who managed to perform 58,387 punches in total with a collection taken in aid of the appeal show.

Sensei Sharon Goodson said: ‘We are absolutely delighted as the kids have smashed their target of 50,000.

‘We were thinking of ideas to do something for Children in Need and this seemed like the perfect chance to raise money and also spread some awareness of our club.

‘It’s been great to see the kids do well and keep at it, as it can really tire you out after a while. I’m very proud of them all as they’ve put a lot of effort in today.’

The group, which was made up of 14 youngsters, aged between seven and 16, took regular breaks during the punching to restore their strength.

Jack Durant, 14, from Fareham, who took part in the challenge, said: ‘I could feel myself getting tired quickly as it’s hard work but I think we’ve all done really well.

‘We were all very keen on doing our bit for the cause and working hard together.

‘I’ve never done anything for Children in Need before but this felt really good.’

Also taking part was Edward Ralls, 14, from Fareham, who added: ‘It’s great to be able to do this and support Children in Need.

‘Just getting involved makes me feel that we’re giving back.’
