Fareham MP shows her support for new energy centre in Commons debate

The converter station is being proposed by the National Grid for the Daedalus site at Stubbington.

The link, called IFA2, would connect via undersea cables to a station in Normandy. It will come ashore at Daedalus and connect to the National Grid at its existing site near Chilling, in Warsash.

Miss Fernandes said: ‘I must mention Fareham and the role it is playing in keeping the lights on.’

Speaking yesterday, she said that IFA2 would provide the capability to export or import more than 1,000MW of power, as well as giving access to the European electricity market.

She said: ‘IFA2 will help to create downward pressure on wholesale energy prices.

‘Our wholesale energy price is forecast to be higher than the price in France for many years to come, but it is estimated that, with each 1,000MW of new interconnector capacity, there is the potential to reduce wholesale prices here by about two per cent.’

She said it would also give security in giving a wider range of sources, and that it ‘will help to forge a lower-carbon economy in Great Britain and Europe.’
