FARMERS are being targeted in a new level crossing safety campaign.

Nationally over the last five years, there have been more than 100 near-miss incidents at crossings on farmland and four instances of trains striking farm vehicles. Fifteen were in the south east.

A new campaign will remind farmers of the safety rules – such as using crossing telephones to call the signaller before crossing the tracks.

Working with the NFU, Network Rail is providing guides for their workforce and regular farm visitors.
