Every Christmas St Mary’s Church in Portsmouth raises money for charity and this year the total was an impressive £13,000.
Father Bob White, who runs the collection at the church in Fratton, was overjoyed with the amount donated.
The money will go to charities including The Roberts Centre and Central Point - both of which help feed and provide shelter for the homeless.
Father Bob says: ‘This year we were again overwhelmed by the generosity shown - some £13,000 was raised.
‘The vouchers were distributed to the charities and we heard from some of the agencies who were sharing these vouchers with their clients.
‘Their comments reflected the significance of the scheme for so many people and the difference it can make to them.’
Of the £13,000 donated, £405 was given from a special service.
Father Bob adds: ‘The Churches Homeless Action has been thanking all those that donated at The News Christingle Service.
‘The money was donated to the charity through the vouchers scheme and we want to tell people that it is very much appreciated.’
Before the donations last year, St Mary’s Church was trying to break the £100,000 mark.
The scheme has been running for 12 years and traditionally starts in the lead-up to Christmas.
