Fire on board a 30ft yacht in Port Solent caused by hair-straighteners

A FIRE crew has been called to deal with a fire on-board a 30ft yacht in Port Solent Marina – because the owner had left their hair-straighteners switched on resting on a cushion for more than four hours.

Cosham Fire Station sent a fire crew to deal with the incident after receiving a call from Port Solent Marina staff at 12.33pm.

Before the crew arrived at the scene, the owner of the boat had been contacted, arrived at the yacht, and used an on-board fire extinguisher to tackle the blaze.

Crew Manager Stuart Mangan said the owner was ‘very lucky’ that the boat did not ‘go up in flames.’

He said: ‘The hair-straighteners had been used at 8.30m, so they had been on all that time.

‘It set off an alarm and a neighbour heard it.

‘The owner of the vessel was very lucky – it could have gone up in flames.’

The vessel escaped unscathed save for a smoulder mark on the cushion and a smoke filled cabin.

Crew Manager Mangan added: ‘Make sure you turn off your appliances – even on a boat.’
