A FIRE crew from Bishop’s Waltham was called to help contain a grass fire in Southampton.

An area of heath and gorseland, measuring approximately 200m by 400m, was destroyed by a rapidly spreading fire on Friday.

Six crews, from St Mary’s, Hightown, Redbridge, Bishop’s Waltham and Botley, attended the incident on Peartree Common.

Incident commander Mickey Smithers said: ‘Our firefighters worked quickly to dampen down the flames and surround the fire to stop it spreading, while working in extremely hot conditions.

‘Fires in rural areas spread very quickly, particularly in the dry, hot conditions that we have had recently. We encourage the public to dispose of cigarettes, barbecues and glass appropriately.’

The cause of the fire is unknown.
