THICK smoke engulfed a major route when a tractor broke down on a bridge.

The large tractor and its trailer caught on fire on the Chawton flyover of the A3, just south of Queen Elizabeth Country Park.

Retained firefighters from Horndean and Waterlooville quickly extinguished the blaze, which began at 10.30am today.

Police were called to the scene but the road was not closed. The vehicle was moved from the road at 11.50am.
