Gosport firefighters were called out at 7.50pm last night following reports of a blaze in a smithy used for heating metal.

Crew manager Paul Temperley said crews arrived and put out the fire using a hose reel and a jet, but the building had burnt down.

Volunteers at the village - a living museum dedicated to recreating life in a rural village in the mid-17th century - were last night made aware of the situation.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
