A FIRE gutted a utility room and caused severe smoke damage to a home after an appliance caught light.

Fourteen firefighters battled the blaze, which started in a mid-terraced house in Kenwood Road, Portchester, at 2.30pm this afternoon.

The owners of the council-owned property were not home at the time.

Two fire crews from Cosham and a crew from Portchester put out the fire by 3.30pm.

The cause is being investigated.
