THE man in charge of the huge operation to quell a blaze in Portsmouth said firefighters faced arduous conditions.
Mark Wittcomb, Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service area manager, was in charge of the incident at Bosham Road in Copnor last night.
Speaking to The News he said: ‘The crews were faced with a developing fire.
‘It was a developing fire wihin the garage area which then spread to adjoining premises.
‘There was severe damage to the garage area and damage within the roof space of the terraced houses.
‘Firefighters faced arduous conditions fighting the fire both externally and internally. They were using breathing apparatus in very confined spaces.‘
Around 60 firefighters and 10 pumps attended the incident from Portsmouth stations and further afield.
