A FIREFIGHTER was taken to hospital during a three-hour battle to bring a fire under control.

A blaze broke out at the Belle Isle restaurant, in Chapel Street, Chichester, in the early hours and spread up the outside wall to a Travelodge hotel.

Guests had to be evacuated, but no-one was seriously hurt.

The firefighter suffered minor injuries after he was hit by a falling roof tile.

More than 50 firefighters, including from Emsworth and Havant, fought the blaze, which was out by 4am on Monday.

Group manager Gary Locker, who was at the scene, said; ‘The attending firefighters did an excellent job. This was a protracted incident and crews had to fight the fire from a number of sectors to successfully surround and extinguish it, including a service ventilation shaft with difficult access.

‘I would also like to thank the team at the Dolphin & Anchor in Chichester who helped to look after the evacuated hotel guests.’

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
