FIREFIGHTERS tackled a blaze in Farlington.

Crews from Gosport and Southsea were called to Old Reservoir Road, near Sainsbury’s, this afternoon at around 4pm.

A woman, who was shopping in Sainsbury’s, said: ‘There was loads of thick, black smoke.

‘I saw the smoke behind the shop coming over the roof.

‘After a couple of minutes, the fire services arrived.’

People were posting pictures on Twitter of a large plume of smoke rising from the fire.

Tim Spencer-Peet, station commander from Gosport, said: ‘A fire started in a metal crush unit and spread to recycled steel which was nearby.

‘The initial response from the first crews on scene was very important to get the fire under control and stop it from spreading further.’

Once under control, the blaze was quickly put out.

A mother and toddle group was evacuated as a precaution but no one was hurt.
