FIRE crews were called to the navy’s newest Type 45 destroyer after someone smelled burning on board.

Firefighters from Southsea fire station were called at around 8pm on Saturday to Portsmouth Naval Base.

Someone had reported a burning smell on board HMS Dragon.

Three engines were sent to the dockyard along with a ladder and specialist equipment unit.

The firefighters were stood down after around 45 minutes.

Firefighter Dave Harris said: ‘We were called up there but it wasn’t anything to be worried about.

‘We turned up, had a quick check and stayed for a bit to make sure.

‘We waited around until they were happy nothing was going on and then we came back.

‘We sent three pump appliances, the ladder unit and specialist unit because that’s the predetermined response for an incident like this.’
