FIREFIGHTERS were called out this morning after a car caught fire on the A27.

The driver of a Ford Focus pulled over on the eastbound carriageway between Cosham and Farlington after he saw smoke coming out of the boot.

The incident happened at around 6am.

Crews from Cosham fire station used a hose reel to put out the flames and police arranged for the recovery of the vehicle.

One of the lanes was closed off for twenty minutes whilst firefighters were at the scene.

No other vehicle was involved and the male driver, believed to be between 45 and 50, was unharmed.

Crew manager Rex Leeman said: ‘We coned off one of the lanes and used a hose reel to extinguish the fire.

‘It’s a common practice to close off a lane when we have a job regarding the safety of our crews.

‘The driver was calm but disappointed at what happened.’
