A PENSIONER needed rescuing after he became stuck in mud last night.

Three fire crews – two from Havant and one from Hayling Island – were called to the Fleet Farm Camping and Caravan Site, in Yew Tree Road, Hayling Island, at 11.06pm.

Crews arrived to find a man, believed to be 71 years old, stuck chest-deep in mud behind the caravan park.

He had been trapped for around an hour before the alarm was raised.

Firefighters used a ladder to get across the mud, before they started to dig around him and eventually freeing him.

The elderly man was taken to Queen Alexandra Hospital, in Cosham, via ambulance as a precaution.
