FIREFIGHTERS rescued four people when the lift they were in broke down.

Two fire crews from Southsea were called to Yew Tree Court, a sheltered housing block, in Haslemere Road, Southsea, yesterday at 9.20am.

Three men and a woman – all staff and contractors – were trapped for 10 minutes on the third floor of the three-storey block before firefighters freed them.

Elsewhere, two fire crews from Havant were called to extinguish a burning bin at a block of flats in Mumby Road, Gosport.

The fire took hold in a metal bin in a communal bin shed at about 10.30am yesterday. The fire was put out quickly. The cause is unknown.
