The trio were investigating the cave above Chalkpit Road in Paulsgrove during this afternoon when they realised they needed the fire service’s help to get back on to the ground.

Cosham fire station took the call at 5.20pm.

Two appliances and a specialist vehicle were sent to the scene and a ladder was used to get the girls back to safety.

Earlier in the afternoon, an appliance had attended a false alarm at Portchester Castle due to a dust build-up.
