Firefighters were called to Portsmouth Naval Base after reports of a smell of burning

Four fire engines from Southsea fire station and two from Cosham went to HM Trafalgar Gate at about 7.45am.

However, it turned out to be a false alarm.

The MOD police went to investigate and found that an automatic fire alarm had gone off on an accommodation barge in the dockyard.

Firefighters were stood down at about 9am.
