Flags '˜tribute' to Lions is just a co-incidence as couple marry at the Square Tower

IT looked for all the world like a joyous gesture to mark the British and Irish Lions' historic victory over the All Blacks.

But the Union Flag fluttering proudly over the four stars of New Zealand on the Square Tower on Saturday was there for an entirely different celebration.

The juxtaposition was a pure co-incidence, tipping the nod to Kiwi guests who joined a wedding party at the Old Portsmouth landmark.

‘It was entirely by chance’ said Julia Hender, who runs events at the tower with her husband Steve.

‘The couple had several flags inside to denote where guests had come from and decided to fly the New Zealand flag as well as the Union Flag outside, linked to the freedom flag as it was a same-sex marriage.

‘The New Zealand guests had brought their flag the way with them. Everyone had such a good time that I’m not even sure they knew of the Lions result a few hours earlier!’
