FIRE fighters tackled a blaze in a four–storey block of flats in Hayling Island in the early hours of this morning.
A total of three appliances – two from Hayling Island and one from Havant – was called to the Seafront area at around 12.35am.
On arrival they found a fire in a third floor flat.
Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the fire involved a mattress in the property.
16 fire fighters helped extinguish the blaze using two breathing apparatus and one hose reel jet.
The fire was put out by 1.37am.
The fire service said there will be an investigation into the cause, which is due to take place later today.
Watch manager David Hodge, who attended the incident, said no one was in the property when the fire took hold but the owner returned during the incident.
He said: ‘The fire fighters did their usual job to contain the fire and the damage, which was contained to the mattress of a bed.’
He confirmed no one was hurt in the incident and the building was ‘self–evacuated’ by other residents on arrival.
