Flytippers dump sofas in Hilsea lane

The large pile of rubbish was left on the side of the road and will need to be collected by Portsmouth City Council.

There are growing fears that flytipping will become more frequent when Hampshire County Council introduces new charges for dumping building waste at recycling centres from October 1.

Neil Hood said: ‘Get used to it. It’ll happen more when the charges at the tip come in.’

John Porter said: ‘You pay council tax to local authority to dispose of refuse. Then they charge you again even though you take time, effort and fuel to visit the tip. Just encourages fly tipping.’

From October 1 all Household Waste Recycling Centres are charging for soil and rubble, plasterboard and asbestos. People will be charged £2.50 per part of whole 30 litre bag, or the same amount per item.

Hampshire County Council is also charging for plasterboard and cement-bonded asbestos in Portsmouth at £12 a sheet.

The News has contacted Portsmouth City Council for comment on when the dumped items will be collected.
